CHARACTER
CHARACTER NAME: Pyrrha Nikos
SERIES: RWBY
CANON POINT:End of the Season
LOSS: Her Semblance; the ability to control polarity.

ABOUT THE CHARACTER: Pyrrha is a first-year student at Beacon, a prestigious academy that teaches teenagers (equivalent of high-school aged) to become Hunters and Huntresses - monster-killers. Pyrrha is one of the best, winning the regional tournament at her previous school Mistral and landing a promotional spot as the face of Pumpkin Pete’s Marshmallow Flakes (equivalent of Wheaties, except for the fact that it’s not very healthy for you).

Despite her prowess and obvious skill, she’s very humble and down to earth. She’s eager to meet new people and doesn’t hold herself above anyone else. Just before their initiation - when they would be paired up and then put into four-person teams, the other students were trying to form alliances and try to guess how they could end up with certain partners. Pyrrha was approached by Weiss Schnee, the heiress to a very successful Dust company (Dust being the main energy component, something like gunpowder, in such various forms as fire and ice). Weiss, incredibly aware of social stature and networking, figured that if she - ‘the smartest person at Beacon’ could team up with Pyrrha ‘the strongest person at Beacon’ - together they would create a team that was unstoppable. Pyrrha didn’t seem adverse to the idea, even if she didn’t share Weiss’s outright enthusiasm; she was polite and encouraging and didn’t immediately shoot down the idea.

When Juane Arc intervened to hit on/recruit Weiss into his own partnership, he originally blew off Pyrrha’s existence at all. Weiss tried to tell off Juane by informing him that she and Pyrrha were already planning on partnering up. Oblivious of Weiss’s obvious dislike of Juane and attempts to get rid of him, Pyrrha pointed out that the teams would be four people each, so there was room for herself, Weiss, and Juane, as well as one other. This whole scene played out to show her as a very accepting, non-judgmental person; she paid Weiss the same amount of attention and respect as she did Juane, whereas Weiss, in direct contrast, treated Juane as beneath her, and herself and Pyrrha as a coming from a higher caste. She did convince Pyrrha to help her remove Juane from her personal space (which Pyrrha did using Miló, her spear, but she apologized immediately after).

As a result of initiation, she’s placed in a team comprised of Juane Arc, Nora Valkyrie, and Lie Ren, with Juane Arc as their leader. When he proves to be the weakest fighter (weakest student all around, actually), she offers to help him out with sparring sessions outside of classes. He turns her down in a rather dramatic fashion, admitting that he lied his way into Beacon with fake transcripts, and felt he had to make it on his own. Pyrrha is visibly hurt by this, and although she doesn’t out him to her teammates and friends, she keeps her distance from him as much as she can (considering that, as a team, they share a room).

She’s very warm and friendly person, and has a heavy dislike of mean people and bullies (once threatening she really would break Cardin’s legs if Juane asked her to). In a world where there’s blatant racism against the Faunus, she’s shown herself to be not only sympathetic to them, but knowledgeable in their history, offering the answer to a question in class (after failing an attempt to subtly aid Juane the answer when he was asked and obviously lacking).

All of the characters in RWBY are based off of myths, legends, and heroes from our own world and history. Pyrrha’s team JNRP (Juniper) is specifically made of of characters that disguised their genders, and in the RWBY verse they appear as the gender they were disguised as. Juane Arc is based off of Joan of Arc, for example. Pyrrha is based off of Achilles, who dressed as a woman Pyrrha (meaning ‘red-haired’) in order to avoid fighting in the Trojan War.

These are loose representations, and so I won’t go into detail about Achilles’s history. The world they come from itself isn’t Earth-based. They live in a large city called Vale that seems to be a center of trade and commerce. It’s broken in numerous residential and commercial zones, with rich and poor and middle-class neighborhoods. It’s a coastal city, with docks, and commercial barges and several Dust Shops around the city. The perils of this world that Pyrrha and the others face are twofold; outside the city, in the wilderness, are the Monsters of Grimm, various shadow-creatures lacking Souls that resemble bears, werewolves, and giant snakes and the like. Also, there are factions within the city that present opposition to the forces of good. A group of extremist Faunus called the ‘White Fang’, as well as various goons under the employ of one Roman Torchwick, who is seen in the first episode robbing a Dust Shop like an organized mobster.

ABILITIES: Pyrrha is a first-rate combatant. She uses a spear-rifle (the weapons of this world are almost always dual-purposed, and hers can change swiftly from one thing to the next). and shield combination, called Miló (speak) and Akoúo (listen). Additionally, she’s trained for combat and knows how to set her stance and move and think strategically. She’s also willing to impart her knowledge to others, so there’s a bit of teacher in there, too.

THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: Pyrrha had been walking back to Beacon from the Forever Fall Forest with her class when it happened. She was still smiling softly at what had transpired, both being able to help out a friend and watch him help himself, when she suddenly found herself in a very upscale lobby. The smile disappeared and she dropped into a defensive stance, swinging Milo up as a rifle to sweep the area.

Finding the area clear, she slowly stands, the rifle folding back out into a spear. She keeps it out and ready just in case, slowly stepping back towards the large doors.

“Well, this is different.” She cleared her throat, “Hello? Juane? Ruby? Ms. Goodwitch? Or, if there is anyone here who could offer an explanation ..”

She sweeps the rest of the lobby, the kitchen, and the rest of the downstairs room, then finally stows her spear as she makes her way up the staircase. She still intended on being careful, alert, and thorough, but mystery-building or not, she doesn’t get a sense of any open hostilities in such a nice place.

Looking about the grand halls and opulent decorations, she smiles. Whoever owned this place must be awfully proud of it. Then, she gets to the library and and looks about in open wonder, her jaw nearly dropping at its four stories of knowledge. If there was anywhere she would be able to find out information about this place, she was betting it would be here. Without much hesitation, she dives in, searching for a local section for maps or histories, or any other indication on where, exactly, she currently finds herself.

FIRST-PERSON JOURNAL SAMPLE: Hello, everyone. [She sounds a little shy to start, but she quickly warms as she goes on. The book may be odd, but it’s not the oddest thing she’s ever had to deal with.] I am Pyrrha Nikos, and I am looking for my teammates; Juane Arc, Nora Valkyrie, and Lie Ren. If anyone knows where they are, I would appreciate it.

I understand that there is no voluntary return to one’s home from this place. As such, I am hoping there is someone out there who would be willing to help me along in my studies. I don’t expect anyone to be offering history lessons on Vale, of course, but I was in the middle of my first year at Beacon Academy and I would like to continue some form of studies to help pass my time here so I don’t stagnate. I am open to learning new things, and I am currently a student of spear-wielding and firearms combat, as well as Dust, Aura, Semblances, and their associated properties. [Little does she know yet that her Semblance didn’t follow her here]

Along that vein, I would like to offer what knowledge I posses in the aforementioned subjects should there be anyone wishing to learn the basics.

INTENT: Pyrrha fits neatly into my Badass Warrior Lady RP type, but she’s also the nicest character I’ve ever attempted. I love her as a character and I like the idea of her in Paradisa, and balancing out South the Bitch.
